The project

The Crookwell 3 Wind Farm is an approved 16 turbine wind farm project planned for construction in the NSW Southern Tablelands approximately 17km south-east of Crookwell township, 25km north-west of Goulburn, and 90km north-east of Canberra, within the Upper Lachlan Shire Council Local Government Area.

The project was approved 14 October 2020 for 16 wind turbines with a maximum blade tip height of up to 157 metres, and a total project capacity of approximately 50MW. Energy produced will connect to the grid via the Crookwell 2 wind farm terminal station which in turn connects through a 330kV Transmission Line system.

The project covers an area of approximately 1,100 ha owned by two landholders and used primarily for agricultural (grazing) activities which will be able to continue with operation of the wind farm.

The project is considered the 2nd stage of the Crookwell 2 wind farm, also owned and operated by GPG Australia.

The Project

Background

  • Telstra and Naturgy, through its international power generation subsidiary Global Power Generation (GPG), signed a power purchase agreement (PPA). Under the long-term PPA, Telstra committed to procure 80% of the energy generated by the wind farm.
  • Decmil Group Limited & RJE were awarded the contract to deliver Civil and Electrical Balance of Plant (BOP).
  • Vestas won the contract for Turbine Supply and Assembly (TSA) and Operation & Maintenance (O&M). Vestas is to install 16 V126-3.6MW wind turbines and to maintain them over a 15-year period.

Current status

  • GPG is working closely with Upper Lachlan Shire Council and Goulburn Mulwaree Council to acquire final permissions for construction.
  • Traffic Management Plan and the Biodiversity Management Plan of the project are being thoroughly discussed with the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment (DPIE) before their endorsements.
  • Civil and electrical construction delivery partners are finalizing detailed designs.
  • The turbine supplier has started shipping their preliminary material.
  • Pre-construction heritage surveys are in-progress.

Layout

The project covers an area of approximately 1,100 ha owned by two landholders and used primarily for agricultural (grazing) activities which will be able to continue with operation of the wind farm.
